Judging by the heat, it may not be apparent that summer is over. But a glance at your calendar indicates that the summer season ended on Sept. 23. Yes, we are nearing the end of this month and autumn is bearing down on us. As we close out this season, I find myself reflecting on the past season, as well as the season to come. Thoughts about transitioning from summer to fall, rekindle thoughts of the childhood fun I enjoyed in the streets of my neighborhood. So join me in reminiscing about the summer activities that brought an abundance of fun while playing with my friends in the neighborhood streets, back in the day.
I readily recall the fun that we had playing games on our favorite street, yard, or neighborhood corner. Do you recall playing the games of “Blind Man’s Bluff,” “Giant Steps,” “Dead Block” or “Dumb School?” Maybe you remember games such as “Baby in the Air” or “Kick the Can?” Did you play “Wall Ball” or “Half Ball?” Then there were games which allowed many children to participate. I participated in most of these games; my favorite being “Hot Bread and Butter, Come and Get Your Supper.”
