The eThekwini Municipality has announced an eight-hour power outage scheduled for the northern regions of eThekwini on Friday, 9 February.
The municipality’s official Facebook page announced the planned interruption in electricity supply, informing residents directly.

The notice states that the power outage will affect the Tongaat substation, starting at 8:00 and ending at 16:00.
The purpose of the outage is to facilitate the testing and commissioning of transformer protection systems at the Tongaat substation, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the electrical infrastructure.

Importance of the eThekwini power outage
In a statement, the municipality emphasised the necessity of interrupting electricity supply to execute the maintenance work safely. Residents were advised that customers not switched off by 8:15 on 9 February would remain unaffected by the outage.
“This outage affects a large area. It is important to note that customers who will not be switched off by 8.15am on February 9, will remain unaffected by this outage,” the municipality said.

The scope of the outage encompasses a significant area within the northern parts of eThekwini, prompting the municipality to caution the public to treat all electrical installations as live during the scheduled maintenance period.
The areas set to experience the impact of the power outage include Buffelsdale, Burbreeze, Canelands, Chelmsford Heights, Cottonlands, Dawncrest North, Fairbreeze, Gandhi’s Hill, Gandhinagar, Gwala, Hambanathi Village, Hazelmere, Herrwood, Hospital Hill, Magaweni, Maidstone, Missionlands, Mithangar, Mwanine, the Redcliffe community, Riverside, Riverview Park, Sandfields, Sugarcane Land, Surya Heights, Tongaat Central, Tongova Mews, Trurolands, uMdloti Heights, Vanrova, sections of Verulam, Waterways, and Watsonia.

The City urges residents and businesses in affected areas to make necessary arrangements. This will help mitigate inconvenience caused by the temporary power supply disruption.
